Lakers’ New $52 Million Addition Breaks Silence on Joining LA, Luka Doncic

The Los Angeles Lakers added so many players in free agency that a few have flown under the radar, and one name that might not be on every fan’s lips is Sandro Mamukelashvili. He spent the majority of his career in the Eastern Conference with the Toronto Raptors, and now he’s transitioning to the Lakers after agreeing to a four-year, $52 million contract early in free agency. The 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward brings a versatile skill set that allows him to slot in at small forward, power forward, and even serve as a small-ball center when needed.
Mamukelashvili’s fit with Los Angeles could see him earn the starting power forward role, though the Lakers have other signings to consider, and he might also carve out a significant rotation role depending on how the season unfolds. He explained to The California Post’s Khobi Price that his role is to be a basketball player who can handle multiple positions and bring rhythm to the floor. “They know I’m going to play hard, I won’t take possessions off, and they understand that I really want to win. That’s where I fit,” he said. He added that playing alongside creators like Luka and Austin Reaves will help him offensively, allowing him to flow into open corner3s and knock them down when opportunities arise.
In his final season with the Raptors, Mamukelashvili posted averages of 11.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game, along with 0.8 steals and 0.5 blocks. His move to the Lakers marks a new chapter for a player who has long admired the franchise. Mamukelashvili is a fan of Kobe Bryant and even sports a Mamba Mentality tattoo, reflecting his appreciation for Lakers history. He has spoken about the respect he has for the organization, describing the Lakers as a high-level franchise with a storied tradition and explaining that he’s excited to be part of a “new page” in Lakers history.
“Just the name itself – all of the legends play for the Lakers,” he noted. “The organization is a very high-level organization. They’re starting a new page and it’s just unbelievable to be part of it.” He added that the opportunity feels almost surreal, likening it to a scene from a video game where you imagine yourself playing for the team. “I’m so excited, so happy. The coaching staff is amazing, and I can’t wait to put the jersey on, go out there, and play my heart out every night. You’ve got to have a chip on your shoulder when you play for the Lakers.”
From a modern-NBA perspective, Mamukelashvili offers a well-rounded profile: size, solid defense, and the ability to space the floor, as he connected on 38.9 percent of his three-point attempts last season. Across the board, he should prove to be a valuable addition to a Lakers rotation that is looking to optimize lineups and maximize shooting and versatility. As the season progresses, he could emerge as a key rotational piece or even slot into a more defined role depending on team needs and development. His combination of length, effort, and range makes him well-suited for the Lakers’ system, and his mindset—driven by a desire to win and to contribute across multiple positions—aligns with the franchise’s goals as they pursue continued success in a competitive conference.
