Warriors hire 53-year-old ex-Lakers NBA champion head coach

The Golden State Warriors are preparing to bolster their coaching ranks for the 2026-27 season by adding a seasoned veteran to assist head coach Steve Kerr. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Warriors have reached an agreement to bring on a 53-year-old former Los Angeles Lakers NBA champion as an associate head coach. Charania announced on X/Twitter that longtime NBA coach Frank Vogel will join the Warriors staff, taking on the role under Kerr.
Vogel’s coaching journey has spanned multiple franchises and roles, tracing back to his early days as an assistant with the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, and Indiana Pacers. His big break came in 2011 when the Pacers promoted him to head coach. Over five seasons in Indiana, Vogel steered the team to two Eastern Conference Finals appearances, though both runs ended with losses to the Miami Heat. After his tenure with the Pacers, Vogel moved on to lead the Orlando Magic for two seasons before accepting a head coaching position with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2019.
In his first season with the Lakers, Vogel guided the franchise to its 17th NBA championship, fronted by the formidable duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The 2019-20 season culminated in a six-game Finals victory over the Miami Heat, securing the Larry O’Brien Trophy for Los Angeles. Despite that championship success, Vogel faced a difficult subsequent period in Los Angeles, enduring just two additional seasons before his firing. He then spent a season with the Phoenix Suns as head coach and another season with the Dallas Mavericks in a different capacity before ultimately earning the associate head coaching role with Golden State.
Vogel’s extensive experience across multiple teams and his success at the highest levels of the sport are expected to bring valuable insight to Kerr’s staff. His proven ability to guide teams through demanding seasons, develop defensive schemes, and work alongside star players positions him as a potentially impactful addition for the Warriors in their quest to contend in a competitive NBA landscape.
For broader context on coaching changes and roster moves, headlines remain active across the league, including reports of teams signing notable veterans and executives exploring strategic additions to strengthen their rosters. As the season approaches, the Warriors’ decision to bring Vogel aboard is likely to be scrutinized by fans and analysts who closely watch how veteran leadership and tactical adaptability influence Kerr’s system and the team’s overall continuity. This development underscores the ongoing emphasis on coaching depth as teams seek to maximize performance and resilience during a demanding 2026-27 campaign.
