Former Kansas basketball guard Lagerald Vick has been charged with attempted murder in Memphis, according to court records reviewed by multiple outlets. He faces additional accusations of using a firearm during the commission of a felony. Shelby County jail records show that Vick was arrested on Saturday, with his initial court appearance scheduled for Monday morning. His bond has been set at $1.5 million.
The charges are linked to a July 5 shooting, reported by several outlets. According to the victim, he attended a party when a man with a handgun tucked under his armpit approached him. After a verbal confrontation, the assailant fired at the victim as he attempted to flee, striking him in the back. The victim reportedly identified Vick as the suspect within a photo lineup, having provided the first name to Memphis police, per the Kansas City Star.
Vick, 29, was born and raised in Memphis before joining Kansas in 2015. He remained with the Jayhawks for his senior season but later took a leave of absence for “personal matters.” After going undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft, Vick played overseas professionally for several years, moving between countries.
This case adds to a history of legal trouble for Vick. In April, he faced felony charges of aggravated burglary, theft of property, and misdemeanor vandalism after allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and stealing multiple electronic devices, according to the Star. A court date for those charges is set for July 30.
During his time at Kansas, Vick was also the subject of a university investigation after allegations of hitting a female student. The school recommended two years of probation, though it remains unclear whether those probation terms were ever served.
