If I could just vent for a moment, MLB knows part of what draws in younger fans is the anticipation of fresh, talented players entering the league. So why schedule the Futures Game on a Sunday morning—well, early afternoon Eastern Time—against a full slate of MLB games and the Draft? And why is it only seven innings? The American League defeated the National League 6-1.
In the event recap, Josiah Hartshorn played right field and had two at-bats, grounding out to first and finishing the game in the bottom of the seventh with a flyout to center field. Mason McGwire faced two batters in the seventh: he gave up a hit and then moved the runner to second on a wild pitch, before striking out the next batter on a 96.3 mph fastball. McGwire exited with a runner still at second, who later scored and was charged to him.
On the minor league front, the Iowa Cubs were ousted by the St. Paul Saints (Twins) 5-4. Jordan Wicks got the start and took the loss after giving up two runs on four hits over three innings. He did manage five strikeouts and issued no walks, though he did hit a batter.
Center fielder James Triantos delivered a solo home run in the second inning, his seventh of the year, and went 2-for-4 with a double alongside that homer. DH Moisés Ballesteros also provided power, hitting a two-run homer in the fifth while going 2-for-3 with two walks. Triantos’ homer stood out for the day, even as the Smokies faced some tough swings. A quick note from the park: Mo Baller’s ball landed just to the right of dead center in another showcase moment.
The Knoxville Smokies were defeated by the Biloxi Shuckers (Brewers) 3-1. Brody McCullough, activated from the injured list in April 2024, started for Knoxville but took the loss after yielding two runs on two hits across four innings. Both runs came on a two-run homer in the third, courtesy of Blake Burke, one of which was unearned. McCullough struck out four, walked two, and even hit three batters during his outing.
Right fielder Alex Ramírez supplied Knoxville’s only run with a single that plated first baseman Drew Bowser, who went 0-for-2 but was hit by a pitch. Ramírez finished 1-for-4. Bowser’s performance was limited, and the Smokies managed just three singles in the game.
In the South Bend Cubs’ 5-2 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Twins), Jostin Florentino returned to action for the first time in nearly two weeks and pitched admirably, allowing just one run on two hits over four innings. That run came on a solo homer. Florentino struck out six and walked one. Eli Jerzembeck followed with two scoreless innings to pick up the win, yielding one hit, no walks, and one strikeout.
Cole Reynolds earned a three-inning save, giving up one run on one hit and one walk, while striking out one. Center fielder Kane Kepley contributed offensively, scoring a run in the sixth and later delivering an RBI triple in the seventh. Kepley went 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk. Second baseman Michael Halquist added a 1-for-3 line.
If you’re looking for more context: the overall theme in these recaps is the ongoing emergence of young talent across the farm system, with several players showing notable power and promising command. The Futures Game schedule and its format continue to spark debate among fans who want to see these rising stars showcased at peak times, while others prefer a setup that minimizes conflicts with the main MLB slate and major events like the Draft. As always, the prospect narrative remains rich, with performances from players like Triantos, Ballesteros, and Florentino helping to shape expectations for the next wave of big-league action.
