LeBron James continues to dominate the chatter surrounding NBA free agency as the rumors swirl around where he might land this offseason. The Golden State Warriors, for their part, have reportedly conceded defeat on one of their boldest offseason goals: trading for Anthony Davis from the Washington Wizards and signing James in free agency. The Wizards have made it clear they have no interest in moving Davis, but Golden State remains aggressively focused on adding James to their mix once free agency opens.
For a time, it seemed almost inevitable that James would join the Warriors, and the buzz linking him to Golden State grew louder. Yet, with time, that momentum has cooled. Nevertheless, the Warriors aren’t ruled out in their pursuit of James. In a new report, it appears that Draymond Green, a longtime confidant of James, is actively advocating for a reunion with his friend as Golden State continues to court the four-time MVP on the open market.
After months of speculation about James’s next destination, he informed his longtime team that he would test free agency this offseason. That decision has kicked off another round of bidding for his services, with the Warriors among the leading contenders to land the future Hall of Famer.
Golden State believes adding James could bolster a roster that already features Stephen Curry, and the idea of pairing the two fiercest rivals from the recent eras of the NBA has captivated fans who have long envisioned a future where they could share a roster. This summer, the Warriors recognize they have a real chance to make that happen, if the stars align.
Yet, there are several other strong candidates who could sign James as well, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Miami Heat, and the Philadelphia 76ers. Green, who himself is exploring free agency, is acutely aware of the competition and, according to reports, is actively trying to persuade James to join the Warriors, even as the team’s chances of landing him seem to be slipping.
“They’re really close friends, and I’m sure Draymond is doing everything he can to recruit LeBron James to the Warriors,” NBA insider Shams Charania said on SiriusXM NBA Radio. “I think that is 100% what is going on here. Draymond, to my knowledge, is fully committed to going back to Golden State.”
The ongoing chatter about Green and James potentially teaming up has led some to wonder if Green might leave the only NBA franchise he has ever played for and follow James to the destination he ultimately signs with. For now, however, Green appears dedicated to the Warriors, actively engaging in the recruitment push from within the team’s camp.
Golden State knows there’s work to be done to complete its roster, but the bigger question remains: will James decide to join the Warriors, and if not, what will be the Warriors’ next move to fortify the roster? Green’s outreach is part of that larger effort to secure James, even as the momentum toward a potential reunion in Golden State seems to be waning. The team wants clarity on James’s destination before mapping out the rest of their offseason, and Green’s role in the recruitment is a visible, if controversial, piece of that puzzle.
