PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A Peoria legend is commemorating a milestone as Lorene Ramsey, the storied former basketball and softball coach at Illinois Central College, celebrated her 90th birthday. The milestone gathering drew a crowd of well-wishers to ICC to honor the influential coach and educator who left an indelible mark on local and national collegiate athletics.
Ramsey’s impact stretches back to a time before Title IX when she helped establish women’s athletics at Illinois Central College. Under her leadership, ICC’s women athletes achieved remarkable success, setting a high standard for program excellence. Ramsey guided teams to six National Championships and reached the 1,500-win milestone across both basketball and softball, a testament to her coaching acumen, dedication, and ability to cultivate talent, teamwork, and a winning culture.
Her enduring legacy has earned her induction into 15 Halls of Fame, a testament to the breadth and depth of her influence in the world of women’s sports. At the birthday event, Ramsey reflected on the significance of the moment and the support she has received over the years. She expressed gratitude for the generations of athletes, colleagues, and supporters who believed in her vision and helped push for progress in women’s athletics, even before the formal protections of Title IX were in place.
“We were never held back because we were a women’s team, even though Title IX had not started,” Ramsey said, looking back on the early days of her coaching career. “That was an accomplishment that they helped me—and all the other coaches—share and pursue. And our record at the school will indicate that we got the job done pretty well.” Her words underscored the resilience and determination that characterized her teams and the broader movement for gender equity in college sports.
In addition to her long coaching career, Ramsey’s influence extended into broader public history. Just ahead of her 90th birthday, she was honored with a dedicated exhibit at the Peoria Riverfront Museum as part of a nationwide celebration of America’s 250th birthday. The exhibit, which honors her contributions to athletics and her role as a pioneer for women in sports, will be on display through August 23, inviting locals and visitors alike to learn about Ramsey’s remarkable journey and the lasting impact of her leadership.
As Ramsey reaches this milestone, the community continues to celebrate not only a birthday but a lifetime of achievement. Her story highlights how perseverance, vision, and a commitment to creating opportunities for female athletes can transform programs, campuses, and lives. Ramsey’s legacy lives on every time a young athlete steps onto the court or field with confidence, knowing that pioneers like her paved the way for greater opportunities in women’s sports.
