The All-Star Break is often seen as a chance for players to rest and recharge before the home stretch of the regular season. But for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the pause arrives at an awkward moment, especially given how well they have been playing. That reality became clear Sunday afternoon as Pittsburgh completed a series sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Heading into the break, the Brewers boasted the second-best record in the National League at 59-37 and had been one of baseball’s premier teams since Opening Day. In this latest trio of games, the Pirates outscored Milwaukee 24-9, sweeping a Saturday doubleheader and posting a dominant 14-5 win on Sunday. Esmerlyn Valdez delivered historic performances on Saturday, the Pirates exploded for 10 runs in the fourth inning on Sunday, and strong starts from Brandon Ashcraft, Bubba Chandler, and Paul Skenes underscored the team’s comprehensive dominance in the series.
A photo from Sunday shows Pirates right fielder Esmerlyn Valdez crossing home plate after a two-run homer, greeted by left fielder Bryan Reynolds at PNC Park. The moment epitomized a weekend in which Pittsburgh’s offense clicked and the pitching staff held firm.
Even as the Pirates ride high, manager Don Kelly recognizes that the upcoming rest days are crucial for sustaining momentum in the long run. “Happy going into the break. When you get the offense rolling like that and you have a series like this, you don’t necessarily want to shut it down. It’ll be a good break and ready to come out on the other side,” Kelly said.
The Pirates also faced a setback with the loss of their star rookie, Konnor Griffin, who was placed on the 60-day injured list. Nevertheless, the club is building momentum. They sit at 7-3 over their last ten games and reached 50 wins before the All-Star break for the first time since 2015. While Pittsburgh has made notable strides since last season, Kelly remains confident that more progress lies ahead, happy with how his team has competed in recent weeks.
If this series sweep of the Brewers is any indication of what’s ahead, the second half of the season could be particularly exciting for Pirates fans. Pittsburgh finds itself in the thick of the Wild Card race for the first time in years, and the momentum from this sweep could fuel a strong push after the break.
