Instead, a stoppage-time winner from Jude Bellingham sealed England’s 2-1 victory and propelled them into the semifinals, ending Norway’s memorable campaign in devastating fashion.
For Haaland, the evening could not have been more painful. He was kept off the scoresheet in what many considered one of the biggest stages in his international career. Yet, in the immediate aftermath of the final whistle, one of his strongest supporters made sure he knew she stood proudly of his efforts. Isabel Haugseng Johansen, Haaland’s girlfriend, posted an emotional message after the defeat, reminding him that the World Cup journey transcends a single match or result.
Following Norway’s exit, Johansen shared a heartfelt tribute to Haaland on Instagram Stories. Rather than dwelling on the loss, she chose to celebrate the memories forged during Norway’s extraordinary World Cup run and reaffirm her unwavering support for the Manchester City striker. “The adventure is over for now, but the memories we will carry with us forever. I am so proud of you, always,” Johansen wrote in Norwegian.
Her message quickly circulated across social media as fans responded to Norway’s emotional exit from the tournament. Johansen has been a consistent presence throughout the World Cup, traveling to the United States to support Haaland and the Norwegian side during the nation’s longest spell in a World Cup in decades.
Norway entered the quarterfinals with one of the tournament’s most surprising stories. After earning a spot in the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, the Norwegians advanced to the knockout stage before meeting an England squad brimming with world-class talent. Andreas Schjelderup had given Norway hope by opening the scoring in the 36th minute, but Bellingham answered just before halftime to level the match. Norway appeared to have regained the lead early in the second half when Torbjørn Heggem headed home from a corner, only for the goal to be disallowed due to a foul by Haaland in the buildup.
The stalemate persisted until deep into stoppage time, when Bellingham struck again in the 93rd minute to seal England’s comeback. Haaland was substituted during extra time as Norway pressed in search of an equalizer.
Despite the heartbreak, Norway’s World Cup run represented a significant step forward. The team reached the tournament for the first time since 1998 and advanced to the quarterfinals, surpassing many expectations going into the event, and signaling a promising future for Norwegian football.
