Manchester United have had a testing summer as they push to complete a midfield rebuild. The Red Devils did reach an agreement to sign Atalanta’s Ederson, but the transfer appears to be in jeopardy after medical concerns raised questions about his fitness. In addition, several targets have slipped away, with Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes all moving to other clubs. It also seems unlikely that Bruno Guimarães will be moving to Old Trafford this summer, with the Portuguese international reportedly determined to join Arsenal if a switch materialises.
United have secured a deal with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, yet following the collapse of the Ederson pursuit, the club still requires two more midfield additions to complete the overhaul. In a piece for the Spanish newspaper AS, journalist Eduardo Burgos has named three players United are reportedly eyeing to help rebuild the midfield. On his X account, Burgos wrote: “Manu Koné: Roma want to maximise his value ahead of the World Cup.” He then added, “Alex Scott: the young talent highly sought after for his age and potential, though his price tag will be steep.” Finally, Burgos claimed, “Ayyoub Bouaddi: United have been tracking him since the start of the season, and he’s attracted attention at the World Cup.”
Koné has drawn attention at the World Cup by stepping into the French midfield in place of Aurélien Tchouaméni, who has battled injuries during the tournament. Scott, meanwhile, could represent a high-profile addition given his strong showing for AFC Bournemouth in the previous Premier League season, where he helped them secure a remarkable qualification for European competition. Bouaddi has emerged as one of the World Cup’s breakout talents; the 18-year-old Morocco international dominated many midfield duels as his side reached the quarter-finals. He has been described as an “exceptionally intelligent and technically refined midfielder with elite long-term potential and the qualities to become a complete modern central midfielder.”
