Bellingham hits back at Tuchel as Switzerland rage over unprecedented VAR decision

World Cup drama reached another peak as England and Argentina sealed their spots in the semi-finals, and not without their fair share of controversy. The latest flashpoints only intensified the ongoing debate over refereeing decisions that has shadowed this tournament from the start, leaving little time to take a breather.
England edged into the semi-finals with a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway, overturning a deficit to book a heavyweight clash against world champions Argentina. Jude Bellingham emerged as the architect of England’s comeback, firing in a brilliant equaliser just before the break and then capitalising on Orjan Nyland’s error to send the Vikings home. Despite guiding the Three Lions within striking distance of their first World Cup triumph since 1966, Thomas Tuchel was far from satisfied with his team’s performance at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Asked to explain his disappointment, Tuchel replied, “In every sense. The commitment is there. We made life very difficult with how we played: sloppy, not enough precision, not enough repetitions, lots of technical mistakes.”
Yet Bellingham and Tuchel appear to diverge on the issue. In an interview with The Telegraph, the 23-year-old criticised the former Chelsea manager’s post-match critique. “Whatever. It’s difficult out there; it’s a tough shift. My thoughts and appreciation go to the players who are out there, putting in a great shift,” Bellingham stated. Whether this disagreement is a momentary flare of emotion or signals a deeper rift remains to be seen, but a public clash between England’s manager and star player is precisely the last thing needed as they prepare to face the world champions. Tuchel will need every available asset if he hopes to blunt Lionel Messi’s bid to lead Argentina to back-to-back titles.
Argentina’s path to the semi-finals was secured in controversial fashion through a 3-1 extra-time victory over a 10-man Switzerland side in Kansas City. Referee Joao Pinheiro drew fierce scrutiny after sending off Breel Embolo midway through the second half, a decision that seemed to derail Murat Yakin’s team from progressing in their first quarter-final since 1954. Only five minutes after Switzerland had equalised, Rennes forward Embolo found himself on the receiving end of a second yellow card for a alleged dive, a call that proved decisive in sealing a painful exit for the Swiss. Pinheiro initially booked Leandro Paredes for what appeared to be a clear foul on Embolo, but the card was overturned after a VAR intervention that initially suggested “mistaken identity.” The review later concluded that Embolo had theatrically embellished contact, prompting further controversy amid the match’s late twists. The officials’ interpretation of the VAR review, coupled with the decision to penalise Embolo, left many questioning the consistency and accuracy of refereeing throughout the tournament. As Argentina now advance to meet England, the debate over officiating decisions, their consistency, and the use of VAR remains a central talking point fueling a World Cup already brimming with drama.
