A deal between Atalanta and Manchester United for central midfielder Ederson currently appears to be off, though updates on Monday suggest the Premier League club could try to revisit the situation later in the summer transfer window, despite their ongoing talks over a potential move for Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans. Back in June, reports indicated United had reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Brazil international Ederson for a total package worth up to €45 million, including bonuses and add-ons. However, last week’s reports suggested the deal was not entirely certain due to concerns surrounding the midfielder’s medical and fitness.
Ederson underwent an initial medical in the United States before Brazil’s World Cup campaign and then traveled to the United Kingdom for further checks with Manchester United club doctors. Following those checks, multiple outlets confirmed that the deal was off. Now, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, United are in advanced talks to sign 29-year-old Aston Villa and Belgium midfielder Tielemans instead. This would come on top of a £50 million agreement already reached with Chelsea for Andrey Santos.
Yet, The Athletic also notes that United could still reconsider the Ederson deal later in the summer transfer window as Michael Carrick aims to rebuild his midfield with at least two, if not three, new arrivals. Monday’s report notes that it remains to be seen whether Atalanta and Ederson would be willing to resume negotiations.

He is entering the final year of his deal in Bergamo, with his contract expiring in the summer of 2027. Atalanta believe a new contract would strengthen their negotiating position should the Brazilian pursue an exit at a later date, and La Dea insist that the player is injury free as part of their ongoing considerations. This maneuver comes as the club seeks to protect their assets and ensure stability around the squad’s long-term planning.
