Aston Villa hijack Newcastle transfer as deal agreed for World Cup star

Aston Villa have edged ahead of Newcastle United in the race to sign Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi, following the 20-year-old midfielder’s standout showing for Switzerland at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Newcastle had been in front in the pursuit after reaching an agreement with Freiburg, but Manzambi had not yet made a final decision about his next move when Villa moved decisively to trump them. The Swiss prodigy impressed on the biggest stage, scoring three goals as Switzerland advanced to the quarter-finals, before they were edged out by Argentina after extra time.
Manzambi has featured 58 times for Freiburg, contributing eight goals and 11 assists in all competitions, and he even played for the Bundesliga club in last season’s Europa League final against Villa. Fabrizio Romano reports that Villa have secured a verbal agreement with Freiburg to sign Manzambi for €60 million (£51.2 million), and the Midlands club have also reached a verbal agreement over personal terms with the player, who is expected to sign a long-term deal.
Villa reportedly intensified their pursuit after Amadou Onana sustained a knee ligament injury while representing Belgium at the World Cup, with The Athletic noting that the youngster appears to favour a move to Villa Park. The development would mark a further high-profile coup for Villa this summer, but it continues Newcastle’s recent pattern of missing out on transfer targets at key moments, a trend that has followed them from last year’s window when several clubs beat them to acquisitions.
In a related development, The Athletic also reports that Villa have agreed to sell Lewis Dobbin to Southampton for an initial £9 million plus add-ons. The 23-year-old forward will undergo a medical on Monday. Dobbin scored 10 goals and added eight assists in 39 Championship appearances while on loan at Preston North End last season, highlighting the value Villa place on recouping fee potential from academy products as they strengthen their squad elsewhere.
Meanwhile, speaking on England’s World Cup semi-final chance, Tuchel acknowledged that England were fortunate to reach the last four after their victory over Norway, a remark that has fueled ongoing discussions about the competitive balance at the tournament. The World Cup quarter-finals have produced a slate of compelling clashes, underscoring the tight margins and dramatic twists that have defined this stage of the competition. Social media chatter across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok continues to reflect the heightened interest and debate surrounding the World Cup narrative, as fans weigh the performances of teams and players in a tournament that remains a focal point of global football discourse.
