‘Maybe Should’ve Waited’ — Lavonte David Admits Sudden Retirement Regret Over $23.76 Million Bucs Rookie

Tampa Bay Buccaneers legend Lavonte David, who retired earlier this year after a 14-season NFL career, appears to be second-guessing his decision. In March 2026 he chose to end his playing days, but one element of the Buccaneers’ forthcoming season has left him restless: the presence of their standout rookie from Miami, Rueben Bain Jr. Bain was the Buccaneers’ 15th overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. With elite draft stock and a spotless college résumé, Bain seemed like an obvious pick for a defense-focused draft class. After Bain was selected, David and the rookie connected over a phone call, and that conversation reportedly gave the veteran some pause about his retirement.
At 21 years old, Bain signed a $23.76 million rookie contract and enters the NFL with immense potential. He is expected to inject life into a Buccaneers defense that lagged last season, finishing No. 18 in PFN’s NFL Defense Impact Rankings. The unit struggled to close out plays even as it generated early pressure, highlighting the need for a disruptive presence on the edge. Bain’s standout three-year stretch of elite production at the college level suggests his talents should translate well to the pros, and David has noted how Bain could play a pivotal role within Todd Bowles’ defensive schemes.
David recalled his exchange with Bain and emphasized the rookie’s potential impact. “I knew Bain already,” David told ESPN’s Kevin Clark. “I reached out to him after he got drafted; he told me, ‘Man, I wish you just waited one more year.’ And I was like, ‘Maybe I should have waited, but, you know, the deal is done already. I’m out, my guy.’” Yet even as he clocks in concern over retirement, David insisted he would remain a supportive presence for Bain and the entire team.
Bain was the centerpiece of the Miami Hurricanes’ defense during his time in college. In his freshman year, he earned ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. By his sophomore year, he had become a serious CFP playoff threat. His college résumé includes memorable moments, such as a standout performance against the Texas A&M Aggies—blocking a field goal and recording four tackles for a loss—one of the defining highlights of his college career. In his final year, Bain claimed the Ted Hendricks Award, which recognizes the nation’s top defensive end, and he helped lead the Hurricanes to their first title-game appearance since 2002.
David contends that the Buccaneers’ defense has a bright fate ahead, buoyed by Bain’s ascent and the broader talent on the roster. If he weren’t pursuing football, the veteran star has contemplated coaching, though for now he plans to savor this retirement “honeymoon” period while still watching and supporting the team.
The Buccaneers are set to begin their season on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, Sept. 13. Bain’s arrival signals a potential turning point for Tampa Bay’s defense, aligning with Bowles’ strategic approach and offering fans renewed optimism about the team’s ability to close out games and create consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. As Bain continues to develop and stores of institutional knowledge accumulate within the coaching staff, Tampa Bay fans may witness a revitalized defensive unit that reflects the promise David sensed before stepping away from the field.
