Wätjen joined Borussia Dortmund through the BVB Evonik Football Academy and entered the club in 2015 at the age of nine. The 20-year-old has progressed through all the youth teams and reached the German Championship final with the U19s in 2024. In March 2024, he signed a professional contract, and Wätjen celebrated his first Bundesliga appearance in May 2024, delivering an assist. In total, he has made four appearances for the first team. During his development at BVB, the German youth international also clinched the European Championship with the U17 national team.
Last season, Wätjen spent time on loan at VfL Bochum, where he appeared in 29 competitive matches for the local rivals, contributing two goals. In Denmark, he will reconnect with his former Dortmund U19 coach, Mike Tullberg. This move marks a new chapter in Wätjen’s career, offering a fresh environment to apply his talents and continue his growth at a high level of competition.
