Aprilia have announced that Marco Bezzecchi’s surgery after he sustained a broken collarbone in qualifying for the German Grand Prix was successful. Bezzecchi, who dominated much of the first half of the season by leading the standings and winning the opening trio of races, has recently endured a notable drop in form as a string of unusual incidents has undermined his title bid. Although he remains in contention, he has shifted from clear favourite to one of several challengers in the race for the championship.
At one stage, Bezzecchi led by 17 points over his teammate Jorge Martin, and he enjoyed a substantial 102-point cushion over Marc Marquez. Now, the top five riders are separated by only 24 points, and Marquez has erased the 102-point gap in just four weekends, moving ahead of Bezzecchi in the standings. The German Grand Prix was an event where Marquez was expected to excel, given the anti-clockwise layout of the track, but a high-side crash during qualifying left Bezzecchi unable to compete for the remainder of the weekend and necessitated emergency surgery. With the operation now completed, the duration of his recovery remains uncertain.
Bezzecchi aims to return at Silverstone following the surgery. A pair of statements issued yesterday by Bezzecchi and by Aprilia provided updates on the procedure and recovery. The team’s statement read: “Marco Bezzecchi has undergone successful surgery performed by Dr. Giuseppe Porcellini at the University Hospital of Sassuolo; the fracture of his left clavicle was reduced and stabilized. Although it is too early to define a precise recovery timeline, we hope to see Marco return to racing at the next Grand Prix at Silverstone. However, a more definitive prognosis will be delivered in the coming days based on the evolution of his clinical condition.”
Bezzecchi himself took to Instagram to reassure fans that he isn’t quitting. He has the positive context of a summer break ahead, providing three weeks to recover before Silverstone. His message on social media read: “It’s a tough time, but we’re tougher. Now I’m going to get fixed and get back to work. Nothing will make me give up! See you soon.” This optimistic note comes as Bezzecchi looks to use the break to rebuild his form and rejoin the field with renewed determination.
The update follows a period of fluctuation in Bezzecchi’s results as the season progressed. After a dominant start, his form dipped, coinciding with a cascade of incidents and misfortunes that have complicated his title challenge. With Bezzecchi’s surgery now behind him, all eyes will be on his recovery timeline and whether he can return at Silverstone with his championship aspirations still alive. The upcoming weeks will be crucial in determining if the 2024 season can still deliver a compelling contest for the crown, with Bezzecchi, Martin, Marquez, and the rest of the top contenders all aiming to peak when the calendar resumes after the break.
