Youri Tielemans was determined to join Manchester United this summer, driven by a childhood dream of becoming a Red Devil. The Aston Villa midfielder has long coveted a move to Old Trafford, a fact highlighted by the high-profile offers he turned down elsewhere. In an increasingly transparent transfer market, few deals grip fans and reporters like United’s £35 million swoop for Tielemans, a transaction that arrived with little warning.
Last week, United agreed to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £50 million, following a £39 million deal with Atalanta for Ederson. Expectations were high that the club would welcome two new Brazilians to Old Trafford, but an explosive twist reshaped the narrative. INEOS halted their pursuit of Ederson after a medical failed, and quickly pivoted to Tielemans upon learning of the Belgium international’s £35 million release clause at Villa Park. Villa were reluctant to lose their 29-year-old maestro and even offered him improved terms to remove the clause, but Unai Emery’s side could not prevent United from striking the deal after the player gave his approval and reportedly expressed enthusiasm about playing under Michael Carrick.
Tielemans, a former Leicester City star, is anticipated to travel to Carrington for a medical the next day, finalising a deal that appeared out of the blue despite the midfielder’s lifelong dream. The Belgian has roots in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw and has long harbored a desire to represent United, a dream he clung to since childhood.
Fabrizio Romano has indicated that United’s hierarchy were working behind the scenes over the weekend, identifying Tielemans as their new top target. On his YouTube channel, Romano stated that Tielemans “has said yes to all the contract conditions” and that he is “excited by the possibility to play at Old Trafford,” adding that the dream of becoming a United player had persisted since his youth and that everything was in place.
David Ornstein noted there was interest from other clubs, although Tielemans reportedly rebuffed them in favor of United. This was echoed by talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs, who suggested several Saudi Pro League clubs were keen on the midfielder. A move to the Middle East would have presented a far richer financial package, but Tielemans chose United, informing the club of his decision once Belgium’s World Cup campaign concluded with a 2-1 loss to Spain in Los Angeles. A costly error by Senne Lammens proved decisive, yet the tournament was an impressive outing for Tielemans, who captained a Belgium side under Rudi Garcia that shares the same nickname as United.
Tielemans played a pivotal role, notably in Belgium’s journey where he contributed goals and leadership, including a brace in the memorable group-stage performance and a crucial late penalty in the dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Senegal in the round of 32. His performances highlighted his ability to influence big matches, aligning with United’s pursuit of a midfielder capable of delivering consistency, leadership, and technical quality in the heart of the midfield. As United press ahead with the signing, the club can look forward to a player who has long desired to wear the United shirt and who now has the opportunity to fulfil that childhood dream at Old Trafford.
