Red Sox Have Become MLB’s Hottest Team: Pitching and Offseason Additions Fuel Dramatic Turnaround

By admin — In News — July 13, 2026

Reaching the All-Star break, the Boston Red Sox have arguably been the hottest team in baseball over the past couple of weeks. They own a 14-2 record in their last 16 games and have swept four of their last five series, capping the stretch with a weekend sweep of the New York Mets to close out the first half. This Red Sox squad is markedly different from the squad that opened the season, and several key factors account for the turnaround.
The team’s current strength lies primarily in its pitching and defense, the elements Boston counted on when assembling the roster. The depth is so strong that, even after losing their Cy Young runner-up ace Garrett Crochet to an April setback, the rotation remains among the best in baseball. Sonny Gray has stepped up to shoulder the load, thriving as the team’s de facto ace in Crochet’s absence. He sits at 11-1 with a 2.54 ERA and would have been a shoo-in for the All-Star Game if not for the snub.
Hitting has followed suit, with Boston shifting away from chasing power-hits and instead focusing on simply getting on base to set the stage for a few hot hitters to do the rest. And the season’s most surprising breakout has come from an unexpected place. The acquisitions made by Breslow this year are paying handsome dividends. Willson Contreras has emerged as an All-Star and a top-10 hitter in the league, Caleb Durbin is finally contributing at third base, while Gray, Ranger Suarez, and Jake Bennett are delivering strong performances in the rotation.
Even players who seemed like fringe pieces, such as Anthony Seigler, are contributing to Boston’s success, underscoring the breadth of impact from the midseason moves. The Red Sox are 14-2 in their last 16 games and have swept four of five series, including three straight on the road. They head into the All-Star break just 0.5 games behind the third American League wild-card spot, keeping them very much in the hunt.
Looking ahead, Boston should be buyers at the trade deadline; adding another veteran slugger at shortstop, designated hitter, or catcher could be crucial. While a star like Jeremy Peña would be a significant upgrade, any potential deal will need to balance value with the interest of other contenders, notably the Houston Astros who are rumored to be in pursuit. The expectation is that Boston has a plan in place and will act decisively at the deadline to sustain this turnaround.
