Samantha Busch opened up about the “surreal” reality of being part of the NASCAR world while coping with the loss of her husband, Kyle Busch. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she admitted that she still finds herself scanning race-day leaderboards, hoping to glimpse his name among the standings. Kyle, a revered figure in the sport who NASCAR described as a “future Hall of Famer,” died suddenly on May 21 after a brief, severe illness that was later identified as sepsis. He was 41 years old.
In the weeks since Kyle’s passing, Samantha has reflected on the profound influence he had on NASCAR and on the community that supported her family through an unimaginable time. She explained that watching race days come and go without Kyle has been a painful ongoing reminder of the emptiness left behind. “As another race day approaches I’m reminded again how much it hurts that we’re not there cheering on Kyle. It still feels surreal watching from the couch,” she wrote, adding, “I still catch myself looking for his name on the leaderboard.”
Samantha and Kyle are parents to Brexton and Lennix. In her Sunday post, she expressed gratitude to the fans and to the NASCAR community for the overwhelming support shown since Kyle’s sudden death. “Over the past weeks you’ve surrounded Brexton, Lennix, and me in ways I will never be able to fully put into words,” she wrote. “You have honored Kyle’s life and legacy, shared your memories, prayed for us, cried with us and reminded us just how deeply he was loved.”
One memory Samantha described as particularly poignant occurred at the Coca-Cola 600 on May 24, when drivers entered the stage wearing Kyle’s gear and bow, a display that brought her to tears and underscored the enduring impact he had on the sport and its people. She thanked the partners of other NASCAR drivers for their kindness—meals when she couldn’t think about cooking, supportive texts that reminded her she wasn’t alone, and continued acts of love toward her family as they navigated the early stages of grief. She also credited her circle of friends and loved ones who carried her and her children through those initial days of mourning.
Looking to the fans, Samantha expressed deep gratitude not only for the support that has come since Kyle’s death but for the decades of encouragement they provided during his career. She acknowledged the role they played in cheering him on through the highs and lows, helping to shape the life they shared as a family within the sport. The message she shared in that social post spoke to the lasting bond between Kyle and the NASCAR community and to the profound sense of loss felt by those who knew him and followed his remarkable journey.
