Francisco Lindor gives cryptic answer when asked if he will waive his no-trade clause

The New York Mets headed into the 2026 MLB season convinced they possessed a roster capable of contending for a World Series title. Instead, they have become one of the sport’s most disappointing teams. At the All-Star break, the Mets sit at the bottom of the National League East with one of the least impressive records in all of baseball. As the trade deadline looms, expectations across the league point to New York being a major seller, but a central question remains: could one of the franchise’s cornerstone players be on the move?
Francisco Lindor’s name has emerged in trade chatter as the Mets reassess their path forward. The veteran shortstop has battled injuries this season, and his production hasn’t reached the peak level fans have come to expect. Rumors of strife within the clubhouse have only intensified speculation that meaningful changes could be forthcoming.
When asked recently whether he would consider waiving his no-trade clause, Lindor did not offer a definitive answer. A report cited his reply as simply, “No comment.” Those two words have fueled ample discussion. Had Lindor immediately said “no,” the speculation might have faded. Instead, declining to respond has left room for interpretation.
Of course, “no comment” doesn’t automatically signal a desire to depart New York. It could simply reflect a reluctance to discuss trade rumors publicly while the season remains in progress. Still, in the context of a disappointing campaign, any ambiguity tends to generate headlines. If the Mets decide to remake their roster, Lindor would surely be one of the most compelling names on the market.
Elite shortstops aren’t typically available, and Lindor—despite an injury-plagued year—remains among the most accomplished players at his position. The hurdle, naturally, is his no-trade clause. Any potential deal would ultimately require Lindor’s approval, giving him decisive control over his own future. Whether he intends to stay in Queens or would entertain a fresh start elsewhere remains uncertain.
For now, Lindor’s brief but cryptic reply adds yet another layer of intrigue to what is shaping up to be a captivating trade deadline for a Mets club that has struggled all season. The questions surrounding him, and the Mets’ broader outlook, will continue to captivate fans and observers as the deadline approaches.
