June and July are rarely the peak months for college basketball drama, yet the sweltering heat of 2026 has brought a wave of surprising player defections, injuries, and a coaching move that blindsided the sport. In light of that upheaval, it’s the perfect moment to revisit our early rankings for the 2026-27 season and roll out a refreshed midsummer Top 25.
2025-26 Record: 27-8
2025-26 Finish: Second Round
With Rueben Chinyelu deciding to bypass the NBA and return for another year, Florida will reload with the same frontcourt that captured a national title two seasons earlier and earned a No. 1 seed in 2026. The Gators also bring back point guard Boogie Fland, whose late-season emergence transformed them from a disappointment into a legitimate national title contender, along with reserve guard Urban Klavzar. The backcourt is further strengthened by Denzel Aberdeen, a highly capable shooting guard who spent last season at Kentucky; he’ll need a waiver to play in 2026-27, something head coach Todd Golden is optimistic about obtaining. Whether Aberdeen can suit up or not, this roster appears to be the strongest in college basketball at this stage of the offseason, and that standing seems unlikely to shift before early November.
2025-26 Record: 28-9
2025-26 Finish: Final Four
Aside from star freshman guard Keaton Wagler, nearly every key contributor from Illinois is expected back as the program makes its first Final Four appearance since 2005. Andrej Stojaković briefly unsettled fans before withdrawing from the NBA Draft on deadline day. The addition of Providence transfer Stefan Vaaks should help bridge the gaps left by Wagler and fellow guard Kylan Boswell. The big question for the Illini will be whether incoming freshman Quintin Coleman can step in and effectively replace Wagler while steering the offense. Either way, Illinois projects as an exceptionally strong team.
2025-26 Record: 35-3
2025-26 Finish: Elite Eight
The last two runs at a national title have ended painfully for Duke, but Jon Scheyer’s program should be right back in the mix for 2027. Duke returns four of its top six scorers from last year’s No. 1 seed and adds a strong transfer haul, including top-rated Wisconsin transfer John Blackwell, Belmont transfer Drew Scharnowski, and five-star freshmen Cameron Williams, Deron Rippey Jr., and Bryson Howard. Without a doubt, Duke looks like a major player once again as the season unfolds.
2025-26 Record: 34-6
2025-26 Finish: National Runners-Up
Losing Solo Ball for the year due to wrist surgery is a significant setback, but it’s tempered by the confirmed returns of Silas Demary, NCAA Tournament hero Braylon Mullins, and Jayden Ross. The Illini also added transfer pieces Nikolas Khamenia (Duke), Najai Hines (Seton Hall), and Oskar Giltay (Stanford) to help offset the departures of Alex Karaban and Tarris Reed Jr. The combination of experienced leadership and fresh talent should keep Illinois in the upper echelon as they navigate this season.
