The San Francisco 49ers had by all accounts a good season last year. The team won 12 games and secured a playoff victory. Only seven NFL teams accomplished both feats in 2025. The Niners aren’t satisfied.San Francisco is looking to make a deeper run in the playoffs. To do so, some 2025 starters may see their job taken in training camp. For that reason, we could see shakeup in the depth chart over the next few months.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementMarc Adams of 49ers Webzone discussed a notable position battle on the defensive side. He looked at the safety position as one that could upgrade before the 2026 season. Here’s what Adams shared on the battle between Ji’Ayir Brown and Marques Sigle.”The safety position in San Francisco has become a focal point of concern following a 2025 campaign when inconsistency was often a theme for the defensive backfield. While Ji’Ayir Brown has shown to have a nose for the ball, there are times his play leaves fans wanting more. Finishing the season with a 61.7 PFF grade, ranking 62nd among 98 qualified safeties, Brown struggled to find a rhythm, particularly in coverage, where he posted a 56.5 grade. And one of Brown’s biggest weaknesses is that he misses too many tackles.Enter Marques Sigle, the 2025 fifth-round pick who is looking to capitalize on his sophomore season. Sigle showed flashes of potential in his rookie year, and training camp will be an opportunity for Sigle. One advantage he already has is that he is one of the team’s most consistent tacklers. That’s something you need at the safety position.”Los Angeles Rams tight end Colby Parkinson (84) attempts to make a catch over San Francisco 49ers safety Marques Sigle (36) during the second half at SoFi Stadium. Kirby Lee-Imagn ImagesIt’s certain that San Francisco general manager John Lynch values sure tackling from the safety position. Tackling was Lynch’s trademark in an impressive NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos. Whether or not Sigle’s tackling prowess is enough to unseat Brown is another matter.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementContinuity is huge in football. Certainly, the Niners would like to see more quality starters return to the starting lineup than not. Even so, if Sigle is able to surpass Brown in the 2026 offseason, it would say more about the progress Sigle has made than any failure on Brown’s part.More than anything, San Francisco wants to maintain if not build upon one of the league’s top defenses a season ago. If it can do that, look for the team to be back in the thick of the NFC title race in January.
