The 2026 MLB Draft has come and gone and the Red Sox added several new players to their organization.Boston brought in eight position players and 11 pitchers, including teammates and roommates shortstop Jake Schaffner and outfielder Owen Hull out of UNC.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe Red Sox used their first pick of the draft to draft Schaffner, which was a bit of a surprise. Here’s what those around MLB are saying about Schaffner, and how experts graded the Red Sox’ first-round pick.USA TODAY:“A theoretical reach, the Red Sox opt for the gritty leadoff man who led the Tar Heels to the men’s College World Series final. Schaffner can toggle among all infield positions, stole 26 bases in 29 tries and a .467 OBP in his platform year.”Grade: C-CBS Sports“The Red Sox picked up a Competitive Balance pick (No. 67) in the Kyle Harrison/Caleb Durbin trade with the Brewers and it looks like they’re planning to go over-slot with that pick. Schaffner was considered a solid second- or third-round pick because he’s a plus bat-to-ball guy and a rangy defender, though he doesn’t have much power and may not have the arm for shortstop at the next level. Figure he’ll sign below slot so the Red Sox can spend later.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementGrade: DBleacher Report“With limited power upside and defensive tools that are not a lock to stick at shortstop, it’s hard to understand what the Red Sox saw here that seemingly no one else did. He was generally viewed as a late-second or early-third round candidate, so he will need to exceed expectations.”Grade: DThe Athletic “Schaffner transferred from North Dakota State to North Carolina this spring and hit .356/.467/.552 for the Tar Heels, showing plus speed and extreme contact skills. He finished the year with a 9.4 percent strikeout rate, 14.3 percent in the ACC. He makes hard enough contact to project to keep hitting for average with some doubles power in pro ball, although his slugging percentage for UNC was elevated by his speed on doubles and triples. He’s not a shortstop but his speed could make him an above-average or better defender in center. There’s a little Jacob Wilson in the bat, but from the left side, maybe with a touch more extra-base power.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementESPN“The first major surprise of this draft, Schaffner was projected as the No. 52 pick in McDaniel’s final mock draft. This is a pick that could make a lot more sense when we see what his signing bonus is — and what the Red Sox are able to do with their upcoming picks after taking Schaffner here. Boston is leaning into a player here who put up numbers in a power conference — albeit without much pop, hitting just six home runs this season.”MLB“This one took a lot of us by surprise. A transfer from North Dakota State, Schaffner had a very good year after coming to play for the Tar Heels, with a 1.019 OPS and 26 steals. He has excellent bat-to-ball skills with enough
