USC women’s basketball has three players we know are very good if not great, because we have seen them play great for the Trojans. JuJu Watkins, Jazzy Davidson, and Kennedy Smith have shown us what they can do. The other main pieces of this roster come in highly touted and expected to thrive, but we still haven’t seen them play alongside the three stars who will carry this team in the upcoming season. When we think about what USC needs in order to maximize its potential, it’s less about pinning the focus on one player, and more about getting enough from the collective across the board.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementLindsay Gottlieb will need to find not only the lineup combinations that work best, but specifically the secondary rotations in which she can steal minutes for the stars and not lose a whole lot in terms of overall production. When JuJu Watkins needs a rest, you will almost certainly see Jazzy Davidson and Kennedy Smith on the floor. It will be the same or similar when Jazzy and Kennedy need a break. The other two of the Big 3 will stay on the court. This is the luxury Gottlieb and USC will have, provided everyone stays healthy. The lineup combinations will become very interesting when we consider the frontcourt and bench options USC has. Will Saniyah Hall be the main frontcourt piece all season, or will Sitaya Fagan and Sara Okeke become the main pieces of the puzzle? People might read those questions and respond, reasonably enough, “Why does it have to be A or B? What if it’s all of the above?” It’s a great point. It could be less about Gottlieb needing one specific player to be on the court more often, and more about Gottlieb making sure three players all get their chance to shine. The best question might be this: Will USC’s frontcourt players be equally good sharing the court with JuJu, Jazzy and Kennedy, or will one player be better with JuJu, one with Jazzy, and one with Kennedy? That might be the most important lineup combination question for the whole season.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementLet’s not forget Pania Davis and Ryann Bennett coming off the bench, either. Bennett will need to steal minutes in the backcourt and, for that reason, could become far more significant than we might currently think.Back to the main focus, though: It’s less about any one individual, more about how all these pieces fit together. USC’s roster crumbled at times last season without JuJu. Now the whole has to support JuJu Watkins upon her return. This article originally appeared on Trojans Wire: USC women’s basketball success best viewed through full roster
