On Monday night, Netflix continued its venture into live baseball with its broadcast of the 2025 Home Run Derby from Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, PA. The Derby, which is basically batting practice with stakes for the best hitters in the sport, didn’t need much help to be entertaining. All the same, the streamer was proactive in seeking feedback from players on how to improve its format and made the prudent move to axe the countdown clock. The change meant hitters could comfortably find their groove, launch bombs, and continue doing so as long as they kept producing, setting the stage for one of the most exciting finishes to the Derby in recent memory.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIn front of his hometown faithful, Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber nuked 11 bombs in 15 attempts in the final round. St. Louis Cardinals breakout All-Star Jordan Walker stood at the plate for his 15th, do-or-die swing, needing to hit four consecutive homers for the Derby chain, and did just that, silencing the booing Phillies fans and cementing his place in history as the first Cardinals player to win the Derby.Walker’s clutch performance was so impressive that Netflix MLB contributor Barry Bonds, who won a legendary Derby by defeating Mark McGwire in the final round in 1996, told the 24-year-old that it was “the greatest” Derby he’d ever seen.“I thought that was the greatest Home Run Derby I ever seen,” Bonds told Walker on the Netflix set. “I had to match 3 home runs to win. 11 home runs… amazing. What got me, Jordan, was this: You were so calm, and you used your hands well. You never cared how far the ball went. You, you actually used your hands well and as a contact hitter and just hit the ball, just, you were just fluent, just fluent.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“And it was probably the most amazing. And for me to say it, brother, I’m gonna tell you right now, I’ve seen a lot of home runs,” the MLB’s all-time home run leader reminded Walker, “but to come back from 11 with only 15, we’re talking only 15 swings, brother, you got my trophy too, bro. You got my trophy too.”Netflix hasn’t been without its growing pains in its first foray into MLB broadcasts, and there will probably be more when it puts on this year’s Field of Dreams game in August, but if the Twins or Phillies can deliver on even half of the spectacle that Walker did on Monday night, the streamer will be just fine. The post Barry Bonds not shy in assessment of Jordan Walker’s performance: ‘The greatest Home Run Derby I’ve ever seen’ appeared first on Awful Announcing.
