Former Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has backed England coach Thomas Tuchel after his criticism on players despite reaching the World Cup semi-finals.Tuchel spoke of mistakes by his team after England’s 2-1 quarter-final victory in extra time against Norway.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe statements of the German coach did not go down well everywhere and even irritated his playmaker Jude Bellingham. But Kahn said on LinkedIn that the reactions “reveal more about our times than about football.”It’s not Tuchel who irritates me. What irritates me is that these questions are being asked at all. For they reveal a peculiarity that extends far beyond sport.”We believe that defeats are the most dangerous moment in a process of development. In fact, it is often victory. A defeat forces us to analyse. A victory tempts us to avoid doing so. That is why the real work of leadership begins not after a lost match, but after a won one.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementKahn said that Tuchel had not created a bad atmosphere but “done something that should be a given in elite sport. He prevented that a victory becomes more important than the truth.”The difference between good and extraordinary teams is not revealed after defeats but after victories.”
