Jürgen Klopp is close to being appointed German national team coach after the German Football Federation (DFB) has according to dpa sources reached an agreement with Klopp’s current employers Red Bull. There is no official statement so far of the Munich meeting on Tuesday between DFB officials led by president Bernd Neuendorf and Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAn agreement would effectively pave the way for Klopp to take over in succession of Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned in the wake of Germany’s World Cup last 32 exit against Paraguay two weeks ago.Klopp has been Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer since January 2025 and has a contract at the soft drinks makers until 2029.It was widely believed that Red Bull will release the former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool out of his contract. It is not clear whether the DFB may have to pay a fee or whether Klopp could work for Red Bull in the new capacity. The DFB released a statement last week after Neuendorf and his deputy Hans-Joachim Watzke met with Klopp in New York, saying that “an agreement was reached on the key points of a potential contract.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIt is also expected that Mintzlaff and Klopp will meet around Sunday’s World Cup final in New Jersey. Mintzlaff is said to be present, and Klopp will be there in his function as a MagentaTV World Cup pundit. If all talks are successful, a final agreement between the DFB and Klopp, pending final approval from the relevant DFB bodies, and his official presentation could come next week after his return to Germany.Germany next matches are in late September and early October, four Nations League fixtures against the Netherlands, Serbia and Greece (twice).
