“100 Grand” is moving down. After 21 fights at Featherweight inside the Octagon, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veteran Dan Ige announced recently that he is dropping down to Bantamweight for a fresh start after his test cut went well.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIge revealed the news on Instagram, explaining that he successfully completed a trial run to 135 pounds and is now fully committed to making the move.“Test cut/camp to bantamweight was a success,” Ige wrote. “Thank you to the staff at the UFC PI for their commitment to making this possible. Thank you to my wife and my kids for their patience with me during the hungry hours. It’s been a long journey and I can now say I will be making the full commitment to competing in the bantamweight division.“I’ve had 21 fights in the UFC at featherweight against the world’s best, and now I’m looking forward to making my bantamweight debut this fall,” Ige continued. “New venture, new challenges and big opportunities lie ahead! Excited for this new chapter.”Ige (19-17) is currently riding a two-fight losing streak and is coming off the first stoppage loss of his long career, which came against Melquizael Costa at UFC Houston (watch highlights). The 34-year-old is 1-4 across his last five fights, with his lone win during that stretch coming against Sean Woodson at UFC 314 (watch highlights).AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementOf course, Ige also became an absolute legend during his Featherweight run when he stepped up on just two hours’ notice to fight Diego Lopes in the co-main event of UFC 303.That kind of move buys a fighter a lot of goodwill. Now, “100 Grand” is hoping a new division can create new opportunities. The decision to drop to Bantamweight could be a positive one for Ige, who should carry serious power at 135 pounds. He has always been durable, explosive and dangerous in pockets, and a fresh start in a new weight class might be exactly what he needs. That said, we have seen this story go sideways plenty of times, especially when older fighters make late-career drops after years of competing at a higher weight.Nevertheless, it is happening and Ige at Bantamweight should be fun.Ige vs. Ricky Simon, anyone? To checkout UFC’s upcoming schedule of events click here.
