The New York Knicks didn’t do much in terms of picking up players in the 2026 NBA Draft, but the player they did get is already making quite an impression in the Summer League, which could come at the detriment of an established Knick.Jack Kayil was the Knicks’ 39th overall pick in the draft and at first, it wasn’t exactly clear how Kayil would be utilized by New York. According to a report from SNY’s Ian Begley, the Knicks were initially planing on stashing the German guard in Europe, even though Kayli was preparing to come to the United States right away.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHowever, the Knicks soon worked on a deal to bring Kayil over the U.S., where he made his Summer League debut against the San Antonio Spurs, scoring 12 points with three assists in 21 minutes might have made enough of an impression on the Knicks that they could consider keeping him around the NBA squad full time next season, and while that’s good news for Kayil, it’s bad news for Tyler Kolek, whose job could be on the line if Kayil keeps it up.Kolek is already at the bottom of the Knicks’ depth chart when it comes to guards and the Knicks being a guard-heavy team as it is has meant that Kolek hasn’t had many opportunities in New York.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHe averaged 11.7 minutes last season and while head coach Mike Brown made more of an effort to incorporate Kolek on the floor and facilitate his growth, it is just Kolek’s second season after all, there simply much for him to do on the Knicks as they are nor is there a big opportunity for him to make a bigger impression on the floor.Adding in another guard like Kayil, who’s five years younger than Kolek and on a cheaper contract, makes Kolek’s position even more precarious than before.Should Kayil continue to excel in Summer League and show that he can be the kind of fast-paced playmaker that can sit deep on the bench, where Kolek is hoping to sit next season, than Kolek could easily be pushed out of a job when the time comes for the Knicks to make their final roster decisions for the regular season. That’s all dependent on how well Kayil continues to play in the Summer League but for someone in Kolek’s position, he’ll have to keep a close eye on Kayil’s progress to see if it will be enough to usurp him.
