The Philadelphia Phillies are in dire need of outfield help, and there may be no better outfielder available than Fernando Tatis Jr. by the MLB trade deadline. The San Diego Padres seem prepared to sell if things go south between now and Aug. 3, and if they do, it would not be the least bit surprising if they attempt to move Tatis.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIf Tatis does hit the trade block, should the Phillies make a push for him? It’s complicated, because Tatis is one of the best outfielders in baseball when healthy, but he is also one of the league’s biggest enigmas. For as highly as Tatis has been touted since he entered the big leagues in 2019, he has really only been very good; not great. Especially since his PED suspension that resulted in an 80-game suspension in 2022.Tatis bashed 42 home runs in 2021. Since then, he has topped out at 25, and this year, he is slashing .277/.340/.374 with five homers and 25 RBI over 416 plate appearances.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHe remains an outstanding outfielder, but is he really good enough offensively to warrant taking on the final nine years of his 14-year, $340 million contract?Tatis is making a very manageable $20.7 million this season, but that number jumps to $25.7 million in 2027 and 2028. Then, by 2029, his yearly salary balloons to $36.7 million, which runs all the way through 2024.San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images. That’s a very risky bet for a player who has a .787 OPS his past four seasons. Again, that’s solid, but is it worth that type of money? Now, the Padres could offer to pay down some of Tatis’ contract, but that would also increase the prospect capital being sent their way.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementPhiladelphia’s farm system is thin as it is. Andrew Painter’s stock took a hit this season after getting rocked to the tune of a 7.06 ERA in 14 major-league appearances, and he has struggled in Triple-A. Aidan Miller hasn’t even played this season. Aroon Escobar has been awful.Gage Wood has been very impressive, but you would think the Phillies would want to hold on to him for the long haul.Tatis could be the missing piece for Philadelphia, and a lineup that features Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh and Tatis could be lethal. It could also blow up in Dave Dombrowski’s face.San Diego probably isn’t moving Tatis within the next few weeks anyway, so this point is likely moot. But there is a possibility that the Friars make the 27-year-old available to see what they can get in return, and the Phillies really would represent an ideal fit.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementPhiladelphia specifically needs a right fielder, and that’s where Tatis is best suited (no, he wouldn’t be playing second base for the Phillies). The idea is tantalizing. But it’s also incredibly risky, as it would involve Philadelphia eradicating what’s left of its farm system for a very questionable player. If we’re being brutally h
