In 60 days, the New Orleans Saints will officially begin their 60th NFL season with a road showdown against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Sept. 13. Currently, no New Orleans player owns the No. 60 as the team prepares to start training camp. However, our countdown to kickoff series rolls on with a look at each New Orleans player who has worn the 60 jersey.DE Brian Schweda (1967-68)G Doug Sutherland (1970)LB Carl Cunningham (1971)LB Greg Westbrooks (1975-77)DE Don Reese (1978-80)C Steve Korte (1983-89)G Derek Kennard (1991-93)G Craig Novitsky (1994-96)LS Kendall Gammon (1997)OT Ben Archibald (2005)C Nick Leckey (2009)AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementBrian Schweda first wore 67 for the Saints in their inaugural campaign of 1967, wearing it for 23 games over two years and recording 2.5 sacks with 4 fumble recoveries. Doug Sutherland was the first New Orleans draft choice to wear the number. A 14th round pick in 1970, Sutherland appeared in 10 games as a guard. He’d switch to the defensive side the following year for the remainder of a 12-year career with other teams. Carl Cunningham took over 60 in 1971 for 13 outings in his only year with the team.Greg Westbrooks was a 17th round pick by New Orleans in the 1975 NFL Draft. Westbrooks stuck with the Saints for three seasons and 35 games, most as a starting linebacker. Over that span, he’d have 5 sacks with 2 fumbles recovered and an interception. Who followed was easily the most controversial Saint to wear 60 and arguably so for any jersey number.Don Reese came to New Orleans in 1978 from the Miami Dolphins. What followed was mostly trouble, as Reese was the center of a major cocaine problem in the Saints locker room through the late 1970s and early 1980s. He’d play three seasons with the team, leading the Saints with 12 sacks in 1979 and returning a fumble for a touchdown in 1980. Locker room fights, disciplinary issues, and a drug problem that was later featured in major sports publications would be his legacy with the franchise.Dave Wilson #18, Quarterback for the New Orleans Saints calls the play on the line of scrimmage as Center #60 Steve Korte readies to snap the football during the National Football Conference West game against the Los Angeles Rams on 3rd November 1985 at the Anaheim Stadium, Anaheim, California, United States. A second round choice in the 1983 NFL Draft, the 38th overall selection, Korte is the highest drafted player by New Orleans to wear the number. His 83 games is also the longest stretch for anyone who wore 60. Korte was a starting center for much of his seven NFL seasons, all spent with the Saints.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementDerek Kennard spent three of his 11 NFL seasons with the Saints, two as a powerful starting right guard.
