The post Augustine Still Among NHL Coveted Prospects appeared first on Detroit Hockey Now.Trey AugustineThe best indication of the Detroit Red Wings’ evolving feeder system is the Athletic’s NHL Top 20 prospect goalie list featuring two Red Wings and neither is named Sebastian Cossa,AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe Athletic’s rankings, released by the New York Times, has Augustine at No. 3 and Michal Postava at No. 17.Cossa, now with the Utah Mammoth, is No. 4 as he prepares for the likelihood that he will be his new team’s backup goalie in the 2026-27 season. Cossa had been Detroit’s goalie of the future since the Red Wings drafted him in the first round in 2021.Montreal’s Jacob Fowler is No. 1 on the Athletic’s goalie list and San Jose draft pick Joshua Ravensbergen is No. 2. Coincidentally, Ravensbergen will be replacing Augustine as Michigan State’s primary goalie in the upcoming season.Athletic analyst Scott Wheeler broke the 20 goalies into first, second, third and fourth tiers and only Fowler is considered a Tier 1 goalie. Augustine and Cossa are among eight Tier 2 goalies. Postava, who led his Czech team to a title two seasons ago, is a Tier 4 goalie. A case can be made that he deserved a higher ranking.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIt will take time to determine whether the Red Wings made the right decision to move Cossa. In the short term, the decision seems right for the team because Postava is close in age to Cossa (nine months apart) and he showed a higher degree of consistency (.937 regular season save percentage) than Cossa. The Red Wings think Postava can be an NHL backup at some point this season, although they signed Florida Panthers backup Daniil Tarasov to hedge their bet. While reports suggested the Red Wings would only get a second-round pick for Cossa, the Red Wings received Utah’s first round pick in the trade. The Red Wings used the pick for University of Michigan-bound recruit who already ranks 64th on the Athletic’s Top 100 Prospects.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementMeanwhile, the Grand Rapids Griffins will give Augustine the experience necessary to live up to his billing as the NHL’s No. 3 prospect. In this era, it seems like NHL teams want bigger goalies. Six-foot-three seems like the bottom line. But the Athletic’s list has 14 of its 20 goalie listed 6-foot-2 or shorter. That includes Augustine who is 6-foot-1.The post Augustine Still Among NHL Coveted Prospects appeared first on Detroit Hockey Now.
