How Eagles’ offseason changes could benefit star WR DeVonta Smith

By admin — In News — July 15, 2026

DeVonta Smith has never needed ideal circumstances to produce. He set the Philadelphia Eagles’ rookie receiving record before A.J. Brown arrived, later became one of the NFL’s most polished route runners, and continued delivering while sharing targets in an offense built around multiple stars. Now, the Eagles’ offseason changes could place him in a position for the most important season of his career.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementBrown’s departure to the New England Patriots changed the structure of Philadelphia’s wide receiver room, but it did not leave the Eagles without a true No. 1 option. Smith has already shown he can handle that responsibility. His separation ability, hands, sideline awareness, and chemistry with Jalen Hurts make him the natural centerpiece of the passing game. The difference entering 2026 is that Philadelphia no longer has to balance the offense around two established star receivers with similar target demands. That should create a WR1 role for Smith and more opportunities for the offense to feature his route-running precision. The Eagles did not simply subtract Brown and hope Smith could carry everything alone. They added Hollywood Brown, Dontayvion Wicks, Elijah Moore, and rookie Makai Lemon to give the receiver room more varied skill sets. Brown can stretch defenses vertically. Wicks brings size and intermediate ability. Moore gives Philadelphia a quick-separation option who can work inside and outside. Lemon, once fully healthy, offers explosiveness and long-term playmaking upside. None of those players has to duplicate A.J. Brown’s physical dominance for the group to work. They need to complement Smith, occupy coverage, and prevent defenses from treating him as the only threat. That may be where Smith benefits most. A more spread-out receiver room could allow offensive coordinator Sean Mannion to move Smith across formations, create cleaner releases, and use motion or alignment to keep defenses from loading coverage toward him. Dallas Goedert still gives Hurts a trusted target over the middle, while Saquon Barkley forces opponents to respect the run game and play-action looks. If the offense becomes less predictable, Smith’s efficiency could rise along with his volume. The offseason chemistry work also matters. Hurts gathered several offensive players in Orlando for training, workouts, and bonding, and those sessions should help a reshaped group enter camp with a stronger foundation. For Smith, who already has deep trust with Hurts, the next step is becoming the undisputed tone-setter for a new receiver room.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementPhiladelphia does not need Smith to become someone else. It needs him to be a larger version of the player he has already been. The route running is elite. The production has been steady. The trust with Hurts is established. The opportunity is now bigger than ever.If the Eagles’ new pieces fit the way the organization hopes, Smith may not simply survive
