North Carolina guard Terrence Brown will take center stage in a new documentary about his unlikely basketball ascent, set to premiere Thursday in Las Vegas, according to Inside Carolina.“Basketball State: The Story of Terrence Brown” will debut at the 2026 Summer League Film Festival, which runs alongside NBA Summer League. Directed by Minneapolis-area native and childhood friend Gabe Hostetler, the short film tracks Brown from Columbia Heights High School to Golden State Prep, Fairleigh Dickinson, Utah and, ultimately, North Carolina, using behind-the-scenes footage from each stop.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“I see this project as an opportunity to show people the person (Brown) is,” Hostetler told Inside Carolina. “Everyone knows Terrence is an incredible player, a baller on the court, but he’s overcome so much.“For him to be where he’s at now is just a beacon of hope for everyone from Minnesota, and other hoopers around the world that are overlooked and undersized.”Hostetler grew up training with Brown in the Minneapolis suburbs before playing at nearby Armstrong High School. After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles to launch a filmmaking career, directing projects for brands such as Red Bull and working with artists including Rick Ross and Metro Boomin.Five years ago, Hostetler returned home determined to make a documentary about Minnesota’s basketball culture with Brown as one of its key subjects. But as Brown kept ascending, he became the film’s sole focus.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“He was very underrated, no Division I offers, he had a couple local Division II and Division III looks, and he was having a great senior season, but he was still very much under the radar,” Hostetler said. “I just always loved his personality and his character, so I was like, ‘I need to start documenting this kid and his journey.’”To meet the festival’s requirements, Thursday’s screening in Las Vegas will show a 20-minute cut of the feature-length film. The full version will add appearances from some of Minnesota’s biggest basketball names alongside Brown, the mentors who shaped his career, and Brown reflecting on the road that led him to North Carolina.Brown, Hostetler and several members of North Carolina’s program are expected at Thursday night’s premiere at the Strip View Pavilion inside the Thomas & Mack Center, the main venue for NBA Summer League games. After the showing, Brown and Hostetler will take part in a live Q&A.Though Thursday marks the film’s public debut, Brown’s journey is still unfolding. Hostetler has already been to Chapel Hill to begin filming at North Carolina and plans to spend Brown’s first season chronicling the next phase of his career in Carolina blue, spotlighting the coaches, teammates and staff now sharing in his story.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementFollow us @TarHeelsWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Nort
