Jared Verse takes over Myles Garrett’s role of hyping up Browns ugly QB situation

NFL training camps are just a few short weeks away. After a busy offseason, many players are preparing to settle into new roles with new teams. One of those players is Jared Verse who was traded to Cleveland as part of the Myles Garrett trade.Verse is a decent replacement for Garrett on the Browns defensive line. He was the 2024 Rookie of the Year and he’s coming off two Pro Bowl seasons to start his career. More importantly, he’s already saying the right things, no matter how far those things are from reality.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementDuring an appearance on “Good Morning Football” Verse was asked about going from playing with last season’s MVP Matthew Stafford at quarterback to Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders on his new team. Verse was very complimentary of both Browns quarterbacks.MORE: Cleveland Browns giving another quarterback on roster an opportunity“These are two great quarterbacks,” said Verse. “I’m honestly excited to see how it goes further in the preseason, but so far I’ve just seen two elite quarterbacks battling it out.”Watson is now five full seasons removed from being a Pro Bowl quarterback in Houston. He last played in 2024 when he threw five touchdowns and three interceptions in seven games. The Browns started the season 1-6 and then he ruptured his Achilles. As for Sanders, neither he nor fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel looked very good last season. But it’s nice for Verse to say such nice things.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIt reminded me of Myles Garrett’s optimism last offseason when said he had an idea of who would be the quarterback.“I like it enough to be here,” said Garrett. “Smiling in front of you because I think we have a good chance of that happening and making the most out of it.”Who the hell was Garrett talking about? Watson? Sanders? Aaron Rodgers? Whatever he expected to happen with the Browns quarterback situation last year that supposedly kept him in Cleveland, he’s gone now. To his credit as a teammate, he remained supportive of Sanders heading into the offseason. Now with Garrett gone, the responsibility to hype up the Browns dire quarterback situation falls on Verse. So far he’s filling Garrett’s PR shoes.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementDeshaun Watson, Shedeur SandersHeading into training camp here’s a look at the quarterbacks on the Browns’ depth chart:Deshaun Watson (1st round pick, 2017)Shedeur Sanders (3rd round pick, 2025)Dillon Gabriel (5th round pick, 2025)Taylen Green (6th round pick, 2026)Compare that to last season when the Browns had six quarterbacks in camp at one point.Joe Flacco (1st round pick, 2008)Kenny Pickett (1st round pick, 2022)Dillon Gabriel (rookie)Shedeur Sanders (rookie)Tyler Huntley (undrafted, 2020)Deshaun Watson (1st round pick, 2017)Should be another fun season for Cleveland sports talk radio.
