Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks has been making various moves this offseason to build up a Nets roster that he hopes will be able to win more games than it did last season. Brooklyn is coming off a 20-62 record in the 2025-26 season and if the Nets are going to compete next year, they will have to figure out what they’re doing with forward Michael Porter Jr.”We’ll have those discussions. We’ve got time. There’s no immediate hurry right now with Mike. We value him a lot. He had a terrific year last year, arguably his best year as a pro…So I look forward to having those discussions,” Marks said to the media about Porter, according to Brian Lewis of the New York Post. Porter is eligible for an extension this summer and plenty can change depending on how those extension talks proceed.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement”There’s either an extension or a trade. I guess it depends on what one defines as exorbitant. Clearly, he’s not going to get what he’s eligible for,” Lewis recently said of Porter during his appearance on the “Locked On Nets” podcast with Erik Slater of ClutchPoints. “I don’t think they’re looking to lock themselves in to anything, as you would say, exorbitant and long-term. I think Sean Marks, the GM, values flexibility above almost all things.”Porter, 28, is coming off the best season of his career as he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from behind the three-point line in 52 games played. Porter is eligible to sign an extension for four years and $234 million, but it seems that the prevailing thought is that Brooklyn won’t be offering him the max amount that he’s eligible for. With Marks saying that the team isn’t in a rush with regards to extension talks with Porter, it seems to communicate that the talks haven’t hit the point where Porter’s camp is urging for something to happen at the moment. However, with training camp a few months away, that urgency can increase sooner than later, but it sounds like Marks still wants to get a deal done with Porter, similar to what he said when last season ended. This article originally appeared on Nets Wire: Nets’ Sean Marks discusses extension talks with Michael Porter Jr.
