The Pittsburgh Steelers knew George Pickens was talented. What they never saw was what that talent looked like with high-level quarterback play. One year after Pittsburgh traded him to the Dallas Cowboys, Pickens is ranked as the NFL’s No. 7 wide receiver in ESPN’s annual survey of executives, coaches and scouts. His 2025 season was the best of his career: 93 catches, 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns, with five games of at least 125 receiving yards.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThat production hurts more when compared with Pittsburgh’s search for his replacement after the departure. The breakup made sense for both sides, but the Steelers let a good one go and haven’t replaced what he brought. An NFL coordinator told ESPN that Pickens, not CeeDee Lamb, is now the first Cowboys receiver opponents game-plan for. A veteran offensive coach called him “one of the best” contested-catch players he has seen.Pittsburgh saw those traits every week. Pickens totaled 174 receptions for 2,841 yards and 12 touchdowns across three Steelers seasons, averaging 16.3 yards per catch. His flashes were spectacular, but his production came through a revolving door of Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. What a difference a quarterback makes when a receiver needs timing, trust and accurate downfield throws. Pickens found that in Dallas — and Dak Prescott — producing 10.4 yards per target, second-best in the NFL.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe Steelers had reasons to move on, including consistency and maturity concerns that followed Pickens throughout his tenure. Those concerns didn’t erase the ability. Dallas gave him a better passing environment, and Pickens turned it into top-10 recognition.Pittsburgh’s problem isn’t that the trade happened. It’s that the roster hasn’t produced another receiver capable of forcing defenses to account for him on every snap. This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: ESPN highlights Steelers mistake with George Pickens
