New GM Talks Mets’ Strategy As Trade Deadline Approaches

By admin — In News — July 15, 2026

The New York Mets just spent three months finding out what happens when you go with veteran pitches who have failed the year before during their epic collapse, and it hasn’t been a pretty lesson to watch. The Mets bent over backwards to give chance after chance to the lines of Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, David Peterson and Clay Holmes, and what they’ve seen is one failure after another.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIt’s time for something different. Holmes is the only one of those hurlers who’s still in the picture in any viable way, and Senga will likely follow Peterson out the door very soon. The Mets have an opportunity to do something very different, and it’s worth giving it a shot. Nolan McLean has had some struggles with command and inconsistency, but he’s shown enough when he’s on to indicate that he could at least be a good pitcher at the top of a successful rotation.Chrisitan Scott has shown that he, too, can be part of the same effort. He may end up being a third or fourth starter, but Scott has had enough success for the Mets to continue to give him run.Why not go all the way with this? Zach Thornton just threw seven shutout innings against the Boston Red Sox, and Jonah Tong has had enough intermittent success to show that the talent is there. It makes sense to throw all four hurlers into the breach in the second half and see what they can do.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIt won’t be pretty at times, but so what? The Mets aren’t going anywhere this season, and if there’s one thing they should have learned from their statements over the last three weeks that there’s still a season to be saved, it’s that they couldn’t be more wrong. The Mets are already stuck with Manaea, for better or worse, and the Mets can use him in the role of innings eater to help pick up some of the slack when the young starters fail, and they may wind up with Holmes in the same role if they can’t find a trade they like to move him. Moreover, the Mets have enough bullpen pieces to go with openers occasionally, especially since they’re going to be conducting tryouts in the ‘pen. There are always veteran hurlers available if it comes to that, and the Mets will get a lot more information about who they are if they take this kind of gamble going forward. There are no guarantees it will work as well as it did with their reconfigured outfield, but the Mets also have nothing to lose.
