With all of the rumors suggesting that the Philadelphia Phillies are going to be interested in a starting pitcher at this year’s trade deadline, the topic of conversation has been Tarik Skubal, undoubtedly one of the best starters in Major League Baseball, who figures to be the best player traded.Unless something insane happens over the next few weeks, Skubal will almost certainly be the best player dealt.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementFor the Phillies, it remains uncertain whether they’ll even be willing to move on from the necessary players to land a player of Skubal’s caliber. The unfortunate reality here is that Skubal will go for a ridiculous amount if things go as planned, and the same can be said for some other pitchers. That’s why it’s interesting to hear that the Phillies could be interested in Joe Ryan, as Ryan, while he isn’t too expensive contract-wise, could go for a ton on the trade market.“The Philadelphia Phillies are in a good spot in the standings. They currently sit in the second NL Wild Card position, two and a half games ahead of the Miami Marlins. With that being said, they are clear buyers for the trade deadline. Jon Heyman reports that they are currently looking for two relievers and a starter. Looking at their depth chart, it’s easy to see why: they have four listed starters and two relievers on the IL. Playoff teams can never have too many starting pitchers, and it’s clear the Phillies should acquire at least one.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“This leads me to the next point: Minnesota Twins starter Joe Ryan is very likely to be moved by the deadline. His salary won’t break the bank, and neither will his contract if the acquiring team and Ryan exercise the mutual $13 million option. With minimal time between now and the deadline, there should be more clarity on what the Twins plan on doing in the next few days,” Caleb Kerney wrote.I don’t want to say one is better than the other because of how good Ryan is, but I don’t think anybody would say Skubal isn’t better than him. Still, if Ryan is who the Phillies could end up with, I don’t think anybody would or should complain. He has some of the best stuff in baseball and would be welcomed to a rotation that could be one of the best in baseball when healthy.
