UNC Apparently Giving Bill Belichick Second Year for One Important Reason

By admin — In News — July 16, 2026

I’m of the belief that a coach shouldn’t be fired after one season under most circumstances. I don’t mean that if a coach does something outrageous off the field, he shouldn’t be fired, but I’m going based on on-field success.Realistically, many coaches in this college football and basketball era are expected to win right away, especially with how much money a lot of these programs are spending, but we also have to slow down a bit and understand that a lot of other programs around the country are spending just as much, if not more.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThat’s part of the reason why I don’t necessarily agree with North Carolina moving on from head coach Bill Belichick. There were times throughout last season when I thought it might be best to move on from Belichick because of some of the off-field drama and players making comments that they were, but as I thought about it more, I don’t really think it would be fair to do so.It sounds like I’m one of a few who doesn’t believe Belichick should be fired, however, with it recently being noted again that he should be and the only reason he hasn’t been is because of the decision-makers at North Carolina.”The thing with Belichick,” said Ralph Russo, H/T PFSN. “I’ll sum it up here. I go back to what somebody who I think has a pretty good grasp on the state of North Carolina said when I asked him, ‘Will Belichick get a second year?’ And this person said, ‘Well, the people who put Belichick in that position think they are very smart. These people think very highly of themselves and are very unlikely to admit a mistake that quickly.'””So, I still think there’s a little bit of that. If there’s a little bit of progress at North Carolina, I could see these same people going, ‘Well, I guess we got to ride this out. Bill got us better this year.’ I think that’s the one reason why there could be a Year 3 of Belichick, more than he’s actually made real progress and suddenly things are looking great at North Carolina.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementTo bring in a legendary head coach like Belichick and fire him after one year, even if there seemed to have been some problems for the program last season, would be absolutely outrageous.Even if the higher-ups at North Carolina believe they are a lot smarter than other people think, firing him just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. I get that last year didn’t go as planned, but I think we need to slow down a bit and at least give him a second season.
