Former Carolina Panthers QB Could Have Next Step Already Planned

The Carolina Panthers are set to open up training camp in just over a week, getting an early start due to having the extra preseason game. That allows an extra week or so and an extra preseason game for Dave Canales and his staff to evaluate the roster. However, on Wednesday, they lost a quarterback on the roster as Will Grier announced he was retiring.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementGrier was third on the depth chart behind Bryce Young and Kenny Pickett, competing with rookie Haynes King for that third spot on the roster. But he decided to end up retiring ahead of training camp, which moved King to that third spot. The quarterback was drafted by the Panthers at No. 100 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft and has bounced around the league. He rejoined the Panthers this offseason to compete for that third quarterback spot. But now, he could have his future plans already set.Panthers Wire brings up a point from an article Grier’s father, Chad, did with Joe Person of The Athletic this past Spring. He mentions how Grier had an offer to join the Dallas Cowboys as a coach, but instead joined the Panthers roster.“Man, there’s not a huge chance you’re gonna play (in Carolina) this year. But there’s zero chance you get to play if you’re coaching. So I would say you stay in that league as a player as long as you possibly can. You have the rest of your life to coach.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementSo what does that mean? Grier could have something lined up in terms of his post-playing career and that offer from the Cowboys could be there. It’s clear that Grier wants to get into coaching and he has a lot of experience between the college level playing at Florida and then West Virginia, as well as the NFL level.Grier also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles.I guess time will tell if Grier does make a jump into coaching right away or if he waits and tries to find the perfect landing spot.
