The Philadelphia Eagles have grown accustomed to watching DeVonta Smith quietly outperform expectations. Perhaps that’s because he shares the spotlight with stars at nearly every offensive position. Perhaps it’s because his game relies more on precision than overwhelming physicality. Whatever the reason, Smith continues producing while somehow escaping the recognition afforded to many of his peers.Pro Bowl snubs have come at least twice. Now, it’s ESPN’s turn. Jeremy Fowler’s recent survey of NFL executives, coaches, and scouts offered another example of the unfortunate hill he has had to climb.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementSmith failed to crack the publication’s list of the league’s top 10 wide receivers and wasn’t included among the honorable mentions. That’s a surprising omission for one of football’s most complete receivers.Smith has never needed gaudy headlines to validate his game. His route running remains among the league’s best. His hands are dependable. His football IQ consistently shows up in the biggest moments. More importantly, he has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to thrive regardless of who lines up opposite him or how defenses choose to attack Philadelphia’s offense. That makes his omission difficult to explain. Then again, perhaps it says more about perception than production. Smith has spent much of his career sharing touches with elite teammates, making it easy for outsiders to overlook just how valuable he is within the Eagles’ offense.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementSmith isn’t the only Eagle who continues fighting perception. Jalen Hurts rarely seems to receive the credit he deserves despite leading one of the NFL’s most successful offenses. Like Smith, he’s often evaluated through a different lens than many of his contemporaries. That could work in Philadelphia’s favor during the coming season.Quarterbacks and receivers grow together, and few duos understand one another better than Hurts and Smith. Their chemistry has already produced countless big plays, and a season together under Sean Mannion gives them another opportunity to silence doubters. If the rest of the league continues overlooking either player, the Eagles won’t complain. Philadelphia knows exactly what it has in both men, and if history is any indication, those who underestimate the Hurts-to-Smith connection may spend the coming season paying for that error in judgment. This article originally appeared on Eagles Wire: ESPN’s wide receiver ranking delivers another slight to DeVonta Smith
