The last of those was in 2018 when Spain thrashed Argentina 6-1 in Madrid.The two two sides were originally to face each other on March 27 in Qatar for the Finalissima match between the European and South American champions but that match was cancelled because of the Iran war.Sunday’s game marks the first time that the defending champion will face the European champion in a World Cup final. A final between the South American champion and title holder is yet to happen.Spain won their first title in 2010 as European champions but opponents the Netherlands were not the defending world champions.
