Packers training camp preview: Can Tucker Kraft hit the ground running at TE?

By admin — In News — July 16, 2026

The Green Bay Packers open training camp on Wednesday, July 29, marking the unofficial start of the 2026 season for Matt LaFleur’s team. After a third straight playoff appearance but another disappointing postseason failure, the Packers are hoping to finally get over the hump in 2026. The process begins in full on July 29.Packers Wire will go position by position previewing the roster, highlighting battles to watch, the things that actually matter and young players to monitor this summer.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHere is our training camp preview of the tight end position:Tucker Kraft: Ascending star player who was having a Pro Bowl season when he tore his ACL in November of last year.Luke Musgrave: 2023 second-round pick is now an odd fit as a backup tight end who struggles to block inline and doesn’t play special teams.Josh Whyle: Former Titan emerged as a capable move tight end after the Packers lost Kraft last season.Messiah Swinson: Now entering his third NFL season, Swinson has the blocking potential to compete for a role.Drake Dabney: Played in two games for the Packers as an undrafted rookie; can he elevate his game in Year 2?Luke Lachey: Former Iowa star and Texans draft pick will get a chance to prove he’s worthy of a roster spot this summer.RJ Maryland: The son of Russell Maryland and undrafted rookie has impressive speed and receiving potential. There’s a star player preparing to return from a major injury and a bunch of question marks behind him. Tucker Kraft could miss the start of training camp, but his goal is to be ready to go in full for Week 1, so a return is expected early on in camp. If he can pick up where he left off midway through last season, Kraft could be a first-time Pro Bowler in 2026. But is there enough behind him? Luke Musgrave has provided the occasional splash play but little else, especially since losing the starting job to Kraft in 2024, while Josh Whyle is a capable and versatile third option. But can a young tight end step up and win a roster spot in camp? There’s room for a developing inline blocker on the 53. Another big question: Would the Packers trade away Musgrave before the season if they feel comfortable about the depth and get a good enough offer? A 2023 second-round pick, Musgrave is entering a contract year after back-to-back disappointing seasons. — Zach KruseAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIt’s fair to say Musgrave has been a massive disappointment through his first three NFL seasons. The former 42nd overall pick has just two career touchdown receptions and is averaging 18.5 yards per game. He’s become an afterthought since the emergence of Tucker Kraft, and his name has even been mentioned in trade talks, even though he would probably fetch a Day 3 pick. Now entering the last year of his rookie deal, Musgrave has one more chance to write a different ending for his time in Green Bay. It seems highly unlikely, but you never know when things might click for a player. — Bran
