Why highly rated QB Christopher Vizzina didn’t come to ACC Kickoff

Christopher Vizzina, the projected heir to Cade Klubnik at Clemson, didn’t come to the ACC Kickoff event. It was a peculiar development given how Clemson has brought their QB1 to every ACC Media Days since 2019. Vizzina, a four-star recruit coming out of high school, could make enough of a name for himself this season that he later finds himself a highly coveted QB prospect in next April’s draft. As a junior he’ll be eligible, but given the lack of body or work, he’s more of a 2028 prospect. And right now, which is very early obviously, he’s considered one of the better QB prospects for 2028.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHis absence at ACC Media Days was somewhat puzzling, and it even sparked speculation that Vizzina hasn’t locked down the starting job. At ACC Kickoff, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney put the idea that the Tigers quarterbacking situation is unresolved to bed.Swinney explained why Vizzina wasn’t chosen to represent Clemson at the talking season event, and it was just about protocols and customs, nothing more.“Well, [Vizzina is] not a senior, so Olsen (Patt-Henry) was the offensive senior that we chose. So, [Vizzina] wasn’t on the pool,” Swinney said.“You kind of look at, who are your seniors, and you talk to your coaches, and it was Olsen. And then it was Heldt on defense. And then, OK, who do they [the ACC] want? Ross [Ross Taylor, Clemson’s Associate Athletic Director for Football Communications & Strategic Initiatives] … He tells me who they [the ACC] want.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement”There’s three or four guys they list, and I’m like, alright, we’ll take Sammy (Brown). So, it’s really not complicated. It’s not anything more than that.”It does seem a little confusing as to whom the buck stops with when it comes to deciding who’s coming to Media Days- the head coach or the league? While it sounds like the decision is Swinney’s here, it’s also clear that the conference itself has a say in this. And the concept of prioritizing seniors certainly has merit.Of course, the ultimate goal of these events is to put the faces of your program in front of all the media for the nation to see. You want your most important players to get the most publicity.Swinney elaborated further about the how and why that went into this decision. He highlighted how this summer he was forced to bring one less player than last summer.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“For me, I think you’ve got to have context,” Swinney added.“I’ve always taken our seniors, number one. That’s kind of where I start. … So, Olsen is our senior that we chose, and been a starter for us. And then Heldt was a senior, and they all wanted Sammy Brown. So, that’s kind of how it goes. There was a couple other names they threw out there. But I don’t really worry about all that stuff. Last year we got to take four, too. This year, they cut it to three.”Vizzina redshirted in 2023, and spent the past two seasons as Klubnik’s
