A pair of Spartans are considered among the top NHL goaltending prospects. The former starting goalie and the new starting goalie for Michigan State hockey were included near the top of Scott Wheeler’s top 20 NHL goaltender prospects list on The Athletic. Wheeler had incoming freshman goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen as his No. 2 goalie prospect in the NHL, and right behind him was former Spartan Trey Augustine at No. 3.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementRavensbergen comes to Michigan State this upcoming season with high expectations to pick up where Augustine left off. Ravensbergen was picked by the San Jose Sharks in the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft with the No. 30 overall pick, and is expected to be the day one starter this upcoming season.Augustine just wrapped up an impressive three-year career with the Spartans, and is now set to play in the Detroit Red Wings’ minor league system. Augustine won the Mike Richter Award Winner as top goaltender in DI hockey this past season, and was a two-time first team All-American as well. It’s clear Michigan State hockey has emerged as a powerhouse on the national level and now just needs to break through in the NCAA Tournament. The goaltending has been great the past few seasons, and it appears that won’t change for at least this upcoming season (if not beyond that as well). This article originally appeared on Spartans Wire: Ravensbergen, Augustine listed as elite, top goaltender prospects in NHL
