Oklahoma’s offensive line could be ‘most improved’ unit in the SEC

The Oklahoma Sooners built a reputation for producing dominant offensive lines under longtime offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh. In recent seasons, however, the unit has not consistently performed at the same level. There were encouraging signs last season as Oklahoma started three true freshmen along the offensive line: Michael Fasusi, Ryan Fodje and Eddy Pierre-Louis. While all three displayed plenty of potential, they also experienced the growing pains that often come with playing early. But all three of those players are back this season, along with starting center Jake Maikkula.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementTheir return has created plenty of optimism that Oklahoma can take a significant step forward in the trenches. ESPN analyst and former Oklahoma standout Dusty Dvoracek believes that improvement could be dramatic, saying on KREF’s “The Plank Show” that the Sooners could field one of the SEC’s most improved offensive lines.”I think they really believe this offensive line has a chance to be really good, and it’s going to be one of the more improved units in the SEC,” Dvoracek said. “Because at times last year, with the youth and injuries, they struggled mightily. This year, I think it has a chance to be a real strength of this offense and team.”If Oklahoma’s offensive line develops the way many inside the program expect, it could be one of the biggest reasons the Sooners take another step forward in 2026. Experience is often the greatest teacher for young linemen, and returning four starters gives the unit a chance to build on last year’s foundation.Should the group become a strength instead of a question mark, it would provide a major boost for the running game, better production for quarterback John Mateer, and strengthen Oklahoma’s hopes of making another deep College Football Playoff run.Contact/Follow us @SoonersWire on X (formerly known as Twitter), and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Oklahoma news, notes, and opinions. You can also follow Jaron on X @jaronspor.This article originally appeared on Sooners Wire: Oklahoma’s offensive line could be ‘most improved’ unit in the SEC
