Oklahoma Sooners proving to be ‘perfect fit’ for the SEC

By admin — In News — July 16, 2026

College football is a sport built on tradition, and when the Oklahoma Sooners decided to leave the Big 12 for the SEC, many questioned whether the program was ready for that challenge. The Sooners had dominated the Big 12 for decades, winning conference championships and consistently competing for national championships. But joining the SEC meant Oklahoma would now have to compete against the deepest and most physically demanding conference in the sport. They have the mantra “It just means more” for a reason. The question was whether Oklahoma was built for this next step. In their first season in the conference, the Sooners struggled with the transition, finishing 6-7 while adjusting to the SEC level of competition. But in Year 2, Oklahoma showed that it belonged by going 10-3 and making the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2019.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHowever, the Sooners’ SEC success goes beyond just their record on the field. While discussing SEC media days, ESPN analyst and former Oklahoma star Dusty Dvoracek explained what separates the conference from the rest of college football. Dvoracek noted that football is a year-round obsession in the SEC, unlike anywhere else in the sport. That is why he believes the Sooners are a perfect fit for the SEC.”It’s different in the SEC,” Dvoracek said on “The Plank Show” on KREF in Norman. “Football is talked about, is covered in a different way in that part of the country… Which is why I think Oklahoma is such a perfect fit. Because that’s Oklahoma football… The way these fan bases just yearn for SEC football year-round, that’s Oklahoma. That’s this fan base.”Oklahoma’s move to the SEC was always going to come with challenges, but the Sooners have already shown they belong. The program’s history, fan base, and commitment to football align perfectly with what the SEC represents. While there is still work to be done to become a consistent national championship contender, Oklahoma has taken the first major step by proving it can compete in the toughest conference in college football. If the Sooners continue building on last season’s success, they could quickly become one of the SEC’s premier programs.Contact/Follow us @SoonersWire on X (formerly known as Twitter), and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Oklahoma news, notes, and opinions. You can also follow Jaron on X @jaronspor.This article originally appeared on Sooners Wire: Oklahoma Sooners proving to be ‘perfect fit’ for the SEC
