Former Ole Miss golfer Jackson Suber is off to an excellent start in his first Open Championship.Suber is alone at the top of the leaderboard after the opening round on July 16 at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England. Suber leads with a score of 5-under.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementSuber shot an opening 65, vaulting to the top of the leaderboard with an eagle on the 17th hole. He has a one-shot lead over Sungjae Im and Dan Brown. The trip to Royal Birkdale is the first time Suber, 26, has been to Europe. The course is a typical links golf test: firm, fast and littered with bunkers.”This is my fifth day here,” Suber said after his round. “Monday was my first round of links golf, so I’ve played 27 holes before I played the first round today. I’ve never been to Europe.”Suber played at Ole Miss from 2018-22. He was a back-to-back first-team All-SEC pick as a junior and a senior. This is the first time he has been the leader in a PGA Tour event after the first day. He is still seeking his first win on tour.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementSuber tied for fourth on June 11 at the RBC Canadian Open, tied for 30th at the Travelers Championship on June 25 and tied for sixth in his last start at the John Deere Classic on July 2. His good play coming in has helped him adapt to the major conditions.”I feel like I’ve just been playing good the last few months and just knowing that good golf is going to take care of everything, and really trusting my caddie to figure out where we’re going to hit it,” Suber said.Suber is in one of the earliest groups on Day 2. He will tee off at 2:30 a.m. ET on July 17 alongside Sami Valimaki and Shaun Norris. Coverage airs on Peacock and USA Network.Sam Hutchens covers Ole Miss for the Clarion Ledger.
