What was a possibility just a few days ago is now a reality: Syracuse lacrosse legend Casey Powell is the new coach at Division I LeMoyne, also in Syracuse.Brent Axe of Syracuse.com had the report first while Inside Lacrosse confirmed it.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementPowell, who played at Syracuse from 1995-98, is one of the best players in college lacrosse history. A four-time All-American, he was also a two-time winner of the Most Outstanding Player in College Lacrosse Award. He also helped Syracuse win the national title in 1995.Powell has no head coaching experience at the college level, but he has been helping to run the Powell Brothers Lacrosse Company for years, and he has held assistant jobs at Jacksonville University, Cortland State and with the Northwestern women’s team – one of the best programs in the country. As noted by our own Tom Goslowski, the LeMoyne job was open because of the retirement of Dan Sheehan, who held the position for 29 years. LeMoyne won six titles under him, but recently transitioned from D-II to D-I in 2023.Powell will bring instant credibility to a program that already has it, and he should be able to recruit nationally because of his reach with Powell Brothers Lacrosse. Furthermore, his name recognition locally should help keep some local Syracuse-area kids at home, which could potentially complicate things on the recruiting front for the Orange.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe Dolphins went just 4-11 this past season while Syracuse advanced to the national semifinals, losing to Notre Dame.
