Should Carson Beck be the Cardinals’ starting QB Week 1?

GLENDALE – There comes a moment for every rebuilding NFL franchise when the organization has to decide whether it’s chasing wins today or building something capable of winning tomorrow. The Arizona Cardinals have reached that crossroads, but could the answer be Carson Beck?Jacoby Brissett has respect from around the league as he’s viewed as one of football’s most dependable veterans, a steady leader capable of stabilizing an offense. His reported contract holdout, however, reinforces an uncomfortable reality as Arizona clearly isn’t treating him as its long-term answer. If the Cardinals believed he was the future, would a deal have been completed already?Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Beck (19) throws passes during organized team activities at the Cardinals Training Facility in Tempe on May 27, 2026.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe Cardinals also traded for Gardner Minshew to provide experience and insurance, while spending a valuable third-round pick on Beck because they saw developmental upside worth investing in. Draft picks are organizational statements, and selecting a quarterback isn’t simply adding depth; it’s beginning an evaluation process. The NFL rewards teams that discover franchise quarterbacks, not those that maximize eight-win seasons with known commodities.Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett (7) prepares to play the Los Angeles Rams at State Farm Stadium on Dec 7, 2025, in Glendale, Ariz. © Rob Schumacher/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesStarting Beck immediately provides Arizona with its most valuable information. If he develops into the quarterback the Cardinals envisioned, the franchise accelerates its rebuild. If he struggles despite meaningful opportunities, Arizona enters next year’s draft with certainty instead of questions and can aggressively pursue another quarterback. That’s a far more strategic outcome than delaying the inevitable for veterans whose ceilings are already established.May 8, 2026; Tempe, AZ, USA; Cardinals quarterback Beck (19) during rookie minicamp at Dignity Health Cardinals Training Center. Brissett worked out with Trey McBride and Marvin Harrison Jr., while Budda Baker’s recent social media comments fueled speculation that the organization should resolve its contract situations. But relationships shouldn’t outweigh roster construction, and it seems the Cardinals drafted Beck to discover whether he can become their future. The only way to answer that question could be by giving him the football in Week 1.
